Alfred Fruia will breathe new life into an abandoned building on Route 561 in Voorhees Township that laid vacant for more than two decades. Furia plans to strip down the building 308 Haddonfield-Berlin Rd. to its bricks and build an Italian-American market and deli. Market on 561 will open in the late summer of 2022 after an estimated $500,000 renovation on the dilapidated building is complete.

“It will be an old classic Italian market. I was raised in an Italian-American family and that’s where my love of cooking started. I am definitely homeschooled in cooking,” Furia told What Now Philadelphia. “I grew up working at the Italian market on 9th street in South Philadelphia and it will have that same feel.”

At Market on 561, you’ll find fresh fruit and vegetables, prepared gourmet Italian-American dishes, deli meats, homemade pasta, original meatballs, and their freshly made sauce. The town’s code prevents the market from having seating for on-premise dining.

“I would like to take your dining experience to your home. From the bread on the table to the dessert and everything in between,” said Furia. “Our prepared food menu will be available for pickup and delivery.”

Furia says he spent time cooking in numerous South Philadelphia eateries, from pizzerias to cafes and catering companies. He left the food business for a job a Lucent Technologies and worked at Ground Zero. After being laid off, he returned to the food industry.

“I learned a lot from my parents. I always wanted to own my own place. To invite people into my kitchen like my mom and dad did, and I believe I will be an asset to the people of Voorhees Township,” Furia said.
