As the world opens up and consumers start to shed their sweatpants for more fashionable attire, Boyds, the iconic family-owned luxury retailer, plants a flag on the Main Line— following the lead of other successful city brands such as La Colombe and Di Bruno Bros. that have set up shop in the suburbs.
Early this fall, the Philadelphia institution will open an expansive new store in Wayne, PA, bringing designer and contemporary fashions to stylish shoppers on the Main Line. The second permanent location for the upscale women’s and men’s retailer will be located at 201 W. Lancaster Ave., in the bustling Wayne business district in the heart of the Main Line. The new store replaces the Boyds pop-up in Suburban Square in Ardmore, which will close on June 29th.
“The Ardmore pop-up was an opportunity for Boyds to experiment with a suburban location,” explained CEO Kent Gushner in a statement. “The experiment was an overwhelming success, and we found that we attracted a whole new customer base. In fact, we learned during the 20 months that we were operational in Ardmore that 70% of our suburban customers never shopped at Boyds before.”
Boyds Wayne will inhabit an Art Deco structure built in 1931 that originally housed the E.B. Maguire Ford dealership and later became the world’s first Anthropologie store in 1992. The 11,000 sq. feet space will feature both women’s and men’s fashion and accessories by designers such as Alexander McQueen, Christian Louboutin, Brunello Cucinelli and ZEGNA; an expert tailoring department that will provide complimentary alterations; and a sizable parking lot with 35 spaces.
Leading the building renovation is celebrated Philadelphia architectural firm Canno Design. “The design objective was to create a shopping experience that brings the modern edge of the city to the elegance of the Main Line,” said Gabrielle Canno, Principal Architect. “The juxtaposition of old and new is a theme embedded in the design. The existing building has beautiful steel trusses, skylights, and brick walls which are being contrasted with modern, sleek furniture, finishes and fixtures to exude the refined quality associated with Boyds’ longstanding reputation.”
