The Philadelphia Business Journal reports that Kura Sushi Philadelphia will open in the spring of 2022 with about 50 employees. Customers at Kura Sushi can spot an appealing plate and grab it from the revolving conveyor belt. Dishes are kept in special “Mr. Fresh” containers that have a ventilated lid and plate tracking technology to keep the sushi fresh.

If customers don’t see anything they like on the conveyor belt, they can also order from the touchpad menu at their table. Those plates are also sent down a conveyor belt and delivered directly to your table. Each dish is served on a different colored plate that can be redeemed for a prize from a machine that dispenses Bikkura Pon, a capsule with a small prize inside. Kura Sushi teams up with popular brands like tokidoki or One Punch Man to create prizes like lanyard, sticky notes, keychains, and tote bags. A prize is given for every 15 plates redeemed through the plate disposal slot of the machine.

“Philadelphia itself it’s a great city to be a part of because it is a major attraction,” Kura Sushi spokeswoman Lauren Murakami told The Philadelphia Business Journal. “There’s lots of rich historical heritage, a prime shopping district in Center City, and diverse eateries.”

You’ll find unique rolls on Kura Sushi’s menu like the Spicy Garlic Tempura Philadelphia Roll and the Yuzu Japlapeno Sweet Shrimp Roll, as well as classics like their Rainbow Roll and Spicy Tuna Roll. Kura Sushi also serves gunkan, crispy rice, norimaki, hand rolls, carpaccio, ojyu, side dishes like edamame and crispy squid, and desserts like Hokkaido Milk Creamy Tart and Taiyaki Ice Cream. All of Kura Sushi’s food is made with fresh ingredients that are free from additives and preservatives.

Kura Sushi, which started in Japan in 1977 and expanded to the U.S. in 2008, currently has 33 locations across the country and 540 worldwide. The company is headquartered in Irvine, California, and has most of its U.S. locations in the West Coast, aside from their Fort Lee, NJ and Washington D.C. stores. Kura Sushi intends to further expand into the east coast with a location in Jersey City, NJ, and Watertown, Massachusetts.
