The shuttered Kmart in Pike Creek is finally being replaced by two brand new stores.
The Kmart located at 4700 Limestone Road in Wilmington has been vacant since early 2019. Shuttered before the onset of the pandemic, the space has seen significant delays in finding a suitable replacement. Many locals have wondered over the past three years what could possibly be replacing the massive store, and now more information has finally been revealed regarding the future of the space.
New leasing information from Regency Centers has detailed the future for the space, which as originally set to be demolished and replaced with a convenience store and gas station. That plan, first proposed in 2020, has since fallen through, and now instead of demolishing the former Kmart, the space will be split in half to house two distinct storefronts. The first storefront, occupying the left half of the store that is now known as Suite 0001A, will be occupied by Edge Fitness. The second storefront, occupying the righthand Suite 0001B, will soon be known as Pike Creek Community Hardware.
Edge Fitness is a popular fitness club that was founded in 1988 by Vin Sansone. Originally founded in Connecticut, the brand has been slowly expanding across the East Coast and has been specifically targeting the Greater Philadelphia Market. The new Pike Creek location will be Delaware’s second Edge Fitness, and will offer a plethora of new amenities for every guest’s fitness needs.
Pike Creek Community Hardware, meanwhile, is the fourth store under the Community Hardware name. Established in 2008, Community Hardware is a family-owned hardware store that provides a customer-friendly and relaxed shopping environment. Their company slogan is “Let us help you do it right,” and the company prides itself on their staff’s extensive knowledge base. Aside from the new Pike Creek location, three other stores can be found in Smyrna, Laurel, and Pennsville New Jersey.
While the construction of the new Community Hardware is nearly complete, it appears that the new Edge Fitness is far from completion. Neither company has given a tentative date for opening, so it appears we will have to wait a few more months before uncovering any further details.
