Mochinut is a chain restaurant that is growing rapidly within the United States. The chain will be opening four new locations in Pennsylvania including two in Philadelphia and that’s in addition to the first restaurant that is already open in Philly at 108 Chestnut Street. The other two locations in Philadelphia do have storefronts and will be located at 1023 Arch Street and 809 N. 2nd Street. The balance of the four new restaurants will be located at 7320 Old York Road in Elkins Park and 1222 Welsh Road in North Wales.

Mochinut is a contraction of two words namely mochi, a Japanese rice cake made of mochigome or short-grained glutinous rice, and the ever-popular donut. Mochi donuts originated in Hawaii, according to the Mochinut website.

While American donuts, especially cake donuts, can be heavy, mochi donuts are very light and crispy with a soft chewy interior. The innovation with Mochinut’s donuts is that instead of one round donut, a Mochinut is made of a circle of eight dough balls joined together. Mochinut normally carries 25 different flavors on their menu overall, so each location has its choice of 25 flavors for its Mochinuts and then seasonal flavors at different points of the year.

Mochinut has some of the standard donut flavorings like chocolate, strawberry, red velvet, and blueberry, but most flavors are ones that you might never have tasted on a donut before. Ube, which is purple yam, black sesame, taro, and yuzu are some of those Asian-inspired flavors, but you’ll also have a choice of churro, Nutella, matcha, cheesecake, and cookies and cream as other more standard options.

The chain also has bubble teas, but the biggest news is that they also have Korean corn dogs on their menu. Korean corn dogs are made with a rice flour coating and they really take corndogs to another level. Mochinut’s has corndogs that are half hot dog and half cheese stick, a Hot Cheeto coated corndog, and corn dogs coated with chunks of potato or a crunchy cereal topping.

With all these new locations coming to the area, you will have more than one opportunity to try a Mochinut or one of their Korean hot dogs in the future, and it’s always good to try new things.
