PJ Whelihan’s, a staple of the region’s comfort food culinary scene for the past four decades, recently submitted an application to the Plymouth Township council for a hearing on an inter-municipal liquor license transfer, which, if approved, would pave the way for a new outpost in the Plymouth Square Shopping Center, according to local media outlet More Than the Curve.

This news comes on the heels of an announcement last month that the restaurant would be opening a location at 4379 W Swamp Rd in Doylestown later this spring.

At the time, PJW Restaurant Group’s chief operating officer, Jessica Breslow told What Now Philadelphia, “P.J. Whelihan’s in Doylestown is well underway and set to open in early Spring. We have been looking for a location in Bucks County for a long time, and we are thrilled to have found such a perfect spot. Doylestown has amazing schools and passionate sports fans – our team is eager to get open and be a part of this great community!”

And, as if foreshadowing the news of the Plymouth Square outpost, Breslow added, “We definitely have our sights set on continued expansion. We aim to have another PJs open before the year ends.”

A representative of PJ Whelihan’s did not return a request for comment on this story.

The origins of P.J. Whelihan’s date back to 1983, when founder Bob Platzer and the PJW Restaurant Group opened the eponymous eatery, Platz’s, in Lehighton. However, it wasn’t until a decade later when Platzer opened a second restaurant that the name P.J. Whelihan’s Pub & Restaurant was born, paying homage to Platzer’s grandfather, Peter Joseph Whelihan.

Needless to say, over the years P.J. Whelihan’s has become synonymous with classic comfort food and pub grub, and perhaps most notably, chicken wings, which come with a variety of signature sauces including Mango Habanero, Garlic Parm, a rotating wing of the month, and the infamous Inferno. Meanwhile, there’s a reliable menu of burgers, seasonal specials, fried goodies like onion rings and tater tots, salads, chilis, nachos, and mains such as PJ’s Pub Steak, Twin Crab Cakes, Fire-Grilled Salmon, and more, all of which can be washed down with the restaurant’s house beer, the PJW Copper Lager, brewed in collaboration with Victory Brewing Company.

As the company writes on its official website, “each P.J. Whelihan’s has a somewhat unique feel, but all are neighborhood establishments that deliver a great guest experience,” complete with an “impressive TV package that helps make P.J.’s the best place to catch all the sports action.”
